The Magic, The Memories and You! Catch It While You Can!

If you haven’t been to Walt Disney World in the last several years, you may not have seen one of the best shows in any of the Disney theme parks. Inspired by the Disney Parks Let the Memories Begin campaign, it’s called “The Magic, The Memories and You!” So what is it, and why do you really need to make time to see it?

At the Magic Kingdom, Disney has combined a collection of high-powered, state-of-the-art projectors with computer image mapping to put an amazing show right ON Cinderella Castle. Each night, actual guest photos are put into the show. With touching music and light effects, photos are played across the castle like a sort of movie.

When this show first debuted 18 months ago, I eagerly read all the reviews on the internet. Some were not very flattering, mostly boiling down to the fact that people struggle to handle change, and this was a brand new show. I went to see it with an open mind and instantly loved it.

Why will you love it?

  • The special effects are amazing.
  • The photos and videos shown on the castle are touching, especially in combination with the music.
  • It’s a show people of all ages can enjoy.
  • The show has received coveted industry awards, including the Brass Ring from the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions and the THEA Award from the Themed Entertainment Association.

Alan Bruun, Creative Director for Walt Disney Parks and Resorts Creative Entertainment, said they have changed a large portion of the show and orchestrated it around summer fun. “The whole idea is celebrating the memories that our Guests make every day. They come here to make memories. As part of the show, we use photographs of actual Guests to illustrate that idea. So some of the Disney’s PhotoPass pictures taken of them become windows to their memories.”

What’s new in the show for summer?

In this year’s summer fun edition, the entire show is kicked off by Phineas and Ferb, which you’ll recognize with their familiar “I know what we’re gonna do today” saying.  The show now features beach and jungle scenes, and you’ll go under the sea with Ariel, Sebastian and a crustacean band.   You’ll go surfin’ with Goofy, plus join Timon and Pumbaa in singing “Hakuna Matata.” Cinderella Castle transforms from a sandcastle, to an ancient vine-covered ruin, to Pop Art, and into a tropical aquarium.

Alan Bruun said of the show, “Anytime we can transform the architecture, it’s just amazing. But the heart of the show remains what it has always been: pure magic. What I hope is that when people watch the show, they’re not thinking it’s just a neat projector trick. Our goal is that they’re not thinking technology. They’re thinking magic. I want them to really believe they just saw a building dancing.”

The Magic, The Memories and You! Summer Edition will continue, naturally, throughout the summer.

Thanks for stopping by for a photographical Disney ride.
