10 Magical Reasons for an On-Property Disney World Vacation

Disney's Grand Floridian, Grand Floridian Resort, Disney Deluxe Resorts

I’ve stayed off-site, or off-Disney property, lots of times. The reason is simple: staying off site costs less money. While there are some really nice non-Disney resorts and hotels in Orlando, in many cases staying off-site costs significantly less money. You can make a good case for staying off site, but there are drawbacks, and a lot of the reasons not to stay off-site are simply because Disney makes it so attractive to stay in their hotels. I’m going to refer to that as…Disney Magic. Here’s why staying on Disney property can be hard to turn down, even if it costs extra.

1. Magical Express Service.

The benefits start before you even set foot on property. You check your bags at your airport, and like Disney Magic, they show up in your hotel room upon your arrival. With this comes free shuttle service to your resort from the Orlando airport.

Departing Disney can be depressing, but why make it hard work too? Magical Express Service allows you to check your bags and get your boarding passes before you leave your resort. Cue the Disney Magic…your bags appear at baggage claim at your flight destination.  That seems to be a pretty good perk, if you’ve ever toted luggage to a cab, through the airport, stood in the line with all your bags…hard to resist.

2. Free Transportation

If you flew to Orlando, you may not even need a rental car since Disney Magic has provided buses, monorails, and boats to all the Disney destinations, all FREE of charge.

3.Package Delivery to Your Room

Buy some things at the Disney parks? Using Disney Magic, they will appear in your room, once you filled out the form at the gift shop. Never do this the last day of your vacation though, because this Disney Souvenir Magic usually takes 24 hours to appear.

4. Theme Park Free Parking

If you did rent a car or drove to Orlando, Disney Magic makes you exempt from paying their $14 daily fee to park at the Disney theme parks. If you stay off property, add $14 each day to the cost of your room, plus some $ for the extra gas you use up driving in from farther away.

5. Keys to the World

Disney Magic gives you all this in one small “Keys to the World” card:

  • It’s a room key.
  • It’s your theme park ticket, if you purchased tickets for just this specific trip.
  • It’s your dining plan credit card, if you purchased the dining plan.
  • It functions as a credit card to allow adults and children, with your approval, to charge food, souvenirs and tickets to your room.
  • It’s the reason you don’t need any cash on your vacation.

6. The Disney Dining Plan

You can add the Disney Dining Plan to any on-site resort package. Many people LOVE this and swear by it, and others are not as thrilled. Again. with this Disney Magic, you won’t be carrying any cash around with you.

7. Everybody loves Disney Resorts

When you hear Disney visitors talk about staying off property, it’s generally to save money, not because they disliked the Disney Resorts themselves.  Disney does things up right, with great theming, excellent security, and decorating details to the max. Once you’ve stayed on property, you remember all the small details of your accommodations, the Disney Magic.

8. Extra Magic Hours

I should have listed this as number one, because it’s a huge reason many people choose to stay on property. Disney is a very busy place. Even in the off-season, it’s still hopping day and night. Need more info. on what Extra Magic Hours are?

Extra Magic Hours are a great way to get an early start on beating the crowds or stay late while everybody drives back to their hotel room in Kissimmee.

9. Free Activities.

Though you pay more, many of the upper level resorts offer free activities for kids or craft activities with a small fee. Bay Lake Tower has a “Community Hall” room with video games, board games, and crafts where children of a certain age can stay and play for free.

10. Location = This Is Where the Magic Happens

You are closer to everything Disney when you are stay on Disney Property. Shorter drive means potentially less gas. Shorter drive, or using the free Disney transportation, means less time commuting from off-property locations. Time is money.

There are lots of reason not to stay on Disney property.

  • Off-property costs less money.
  • Your large family may not fit in a small Disney hotel room.
  • You want a more quiet environment that the Disney Value Resorts.
  • Again, off-property costs less money. $29 a night for a hotel room in Kissimmee can mean several extra days park tickets, or a nice meal as opposed to sandwiches on a bench.

But with all those reasons to save money, Disney makes it awfully attractive to spend more and get more. The draw of the Disney Magic can be really hard to resist.

  1. We’ve always stayed on-site and taken all these things for granted. In feb we stayed at my motherinlaws condo and while Disney was of course still great to us, we felt like we just kept missing things- I love the protective bubble onsite gives you. We really missed it!

  2. Barbara says:

I’ve stayed both on and off site. For me, I’d rather pay a little more and stay on site. When I needed to save money, I stayed at the Value Resorts and went during the off-season times. When I was able to spend more, I enjoyed the medium and deluxe resorts. I’ve eaten in the room at the Brown Derby where celebrities eat; I’ve spent hours exploring most of the resorts during the holidays; I’ve taken advantage of the guests only nights and mornings at the parks; I’ve experienced so many things that being off-site does not include. And most of all, I love hearing “Welcome home” when I come back to my resort.

Great points, but no Disney resort can beat a stay at Waldorf Astoria in Orlando!

    • I stayed right down the street at Bonnet Creek last Christmas. Going again in June. This time I plan to at least go see the property- I have heard it is fantastic. Did you take any photos? Like to write a review for me?!! Thanks for reading…
