Starring Rolls Cafe Butterfinger Cupcakes: The Do-It-Disney Recipe

Disney Butterfinger cupcake, Disney recipe, Disney snacks

By Melissa L.

Starring Rolls Cafe is a sweet shop located in Disney’s Hollywood Studios theme park. You Disney foodies may be familiar with one of Starring Roll’s most popular treats, the Butterfinger Cupcake.  I’ve got a Disney-re-creation recipe for you to try that can bring home that Disney Magic. We’ll see if you think it’s as good, or maybe better, than the original recipe.

I decided the recipe was the best choice for the Do-It-Disney Butterfinger Cupcake. I’ve also provided some tasty images to aid you with the step by step instructions.  You can find the original recipe posted over on my friend Beth’s site,  A Disney Mom’s Thoughts.  I’ve added my own two cents to the original directions.

Starring Rolls  Cafe Butterfinger Cupcakes

Ingredients

  • 1 box Devil’s Food Cake mix, plus ingredients to make cake
  • 1 batch butter cream frosting
  • 1 can fudge frosting 4 cups chocolate chips 6 Tbsp canola oil 3 King Size Butterfingers (or a bag of miniatures)Quick Butter cream Frosting
  • 18 Tbsp butter, softened 6 Tbsp milk 1 Tbsp vanilla 6 3/4 cups powdered sugar

1.  Prepare cupcakes as stated on the box. Let cupcakes cool completely.  This is a good time to make your frosting, since you will have approximately an hour of baking and cooling.

2.  Using a sharp knife, cut a cone shape out on top of the cupcake. Make sure the cut goes about halfway into the cupcake. Remove the cake and fill the hole with fudge frosting. Add the cake you removed to the top of the cupcake, making sure that the pointy cone end is sticking up.

3. Ice your cupcakes. Using a piping bag may make this process easier.  Let the frosting set for 30 minutes. I used a piping bag for half of my cupcakes and a knife for the other half, as it seemed to get easier as time passed.

4.  While the frosting is setting up, use a food processor to crush up Butterfingers. It may be easiest to use frozen Butterfingers.

If you do not have a food processor, use a meat tenderizer on the flat side while Butterfingers are still in their packaging. This worked great for me as a way to improvise.

5.  Combine the chocolate chips and oil in a medium microwave-safe bowl. Heat on HIGH for 1 minute. Stir and continue to heat at 30 second intervals until completely melted. Allow to cool for 5-10 minutes before using.

6. Dip the frosted cupcakes into the chocolate.

I used a spoon to hold the frosting into place to make sure it didn’t fall off the cupcake. Immediately coat the cupcake with the pulverized Butterfingers – just smash it all over the chocolate. Repeat until all cupcakes are dipped and covered.

7.  Refrigerate approximately 1 hour to allow the chocolate to set up. Then enjoy!

Now the Starring Rolls Cafe Butterfinger Cupcake has its detractors. Our Mouze Bob Angelo from Mouse Chat podcast shared his opinion of this Disney snack.

“There are some treats that have achieved a sort of legendary status among guests at Walt Disney World – the Mickey ice cream bar, the dole whip, and yes, the Butterfinger cupcake, available at Starring Rolls Bakery in Hollywood Studios. A chocolate cupcake with fudge filling, whipped cream icing, a hard chocolate ganache covering, topped with crushed Butterfingers, it’s easy to see why, as it sounds like the perfect dessert for anyone with a serious sweet tooth. Sadly, this cupcake does not live up to expectations. While generously sized (it’s big enough for two or more people to share) and incredibly dense, the cupcake itself is just too much of a good thing. All of the tastes combine to create the perfect storm of sugar overkill, and after a few bites, my wife and I had to push it aside, unable to take another swallow.”

When Bob isn’t writing for Everything Walt Disney World, you can find him on Facebook.

My husband and I also agree that this cupcake is really sweet. My suggestion? Go easy on the Butterfinger topping and really light with the fudge icing filling. Disney cupcakes have a reputation for intense flavors and over the top sugary-sweetness. Cutting back on the topping and the filling may prevent the Butterfinger and the frosting-center from overpowering the great taste of the cupcake.
